Stage One

Build the Foundation

You're about to go out on your own.

(Or You Already Did)

And something in the back of your mind keeps asking if you did it right. Either way, you're in the right place.

Stage 1 is where every trades business starts. It's where the work is real, the risk is personal, and the back-office stuff nobody ever taught you starts showing up in ways you weren't expecting.

This page is for two kinds of people:

  • The one who already jumped and wants to make sure they didn't miss anything. You're out. You're working. But there's a voice in the back of your head that wonders if you left something undone. A legal piece. A financial piece. A system that should have been set up on day one and wasn't.

  • The one getting ready to make the leap. You might be still on someone else's truck. You think you're ready, but you want to do this right — not just jump and figure it out as you go.

WHAT STAGE 1 ACTUALLY FEELS LIKE

Let's be honest about what this stage is.

You are the business. You sell the jobs, run the calls, order the parts, send the invoices, and answer the phone after hours.

When you're working, money comes in. When you stop, everything stops.

You're probably pricing jobs by feel. You're not totally sure if you're making money or just staying busy. The books are somewhere. A spreadsheet, a shoebox, the back of your brain.

And there's a list of things you know you were supposed to figure out that either got done in a rush, or hasn't been touched since you first hung the shingle.

Nobody sat you down and walked you through this. You're not behind because you're not smart. You're behind because nobody built this for people like you.

That's what we're fixing.

Business Intelligence for the Trades

A Note From Robyn

Stage 1 is really tough.

You are probably trying to earn a living, serve customers, and build the business at the same time, often without anyone ever showing you how the business side is supposed to work.

A few suggestions:

  • Be honest about what you do not know yet. You may have rushed a decision, skipped a step, priced work too low, or set something up incorrectly. Finding it now gives you the chance to fix it before the business gets bigger and the problem gets more expensive. Ask for help.

  • Take time to decide what you are actually building. You do not need every detail figured out, but you should know what the business needs to provide for you and where you want it to take you.

  • Get the foundation in order. Work through your budget, income requirements, legal structure, insurance, licenses, accounting, and operating systems. Do not assume something is handled just because the business is already open.

  • Sign up for the Mainstreet MEP® Blueprint — Stage 1: Foundations, and work through each step in order. The goal is not to make you an attorney, accountant, or software expert. It is to help you understand what needs to be done and ask better questions when you need professional help.

  • Listen to our weekly podcast, Trade Finance in Ten, starting with Episode One. Use it to build the financial knowledge most trades owners were expected to somehow learn on their own.

You may discover that you missed something.

You may need to undo a decision or spend money correcting it.

That can be frustrating, but it is far better to strengthen the foundation now than keep building on something you already know is not right.

You do not have to know everything before you begin. You do need to be willing to slow down, learn what matters, and take responsibility for getting it right.

That’s what we’re here for.

Start with the free podcast, and work through the Blueprint - Stage 1, when you are ready to build your foundation.
